News Values Sheet Two (Lesson 2)


News & News Values Task.

Below are seven news stories. You are the editor for the BBC news and you have to decide the news values for each story, its importance to the viewers and the order that you will put the news stories in.

The seven stories are:

Lack of social housing in some areas of the country forcing more and more people in twenties and thirties to still be living with their parents.

Unemployment rises to highest level in four years and is now standing at 6.8%.

Bank of England announces interest rate rise of 3%.

Bomb in crowded market in Afghanistan kills 56 people. The Taliban claim responsibility

Tesco’s announce record losses and will begin a programme of closing several stores nationwide over the next three years with a loss of approximately 12,000 jobs.

A rail crash in China, two trains collided in the middle of the night just outside small industrial town. Not yet known if any major loss of life.

Schools in England show decline in number of students obtaining 5 or more gcse ‘c’ grades for the first time in 7 years. Government says it is due to tougher exams being introduced.


Running Order

Which of these stories will also be included in the regional news programme. Give your reasons for your selections.
